Dental Insurance

If you are a fully benefits-eligible employee, you and your family can participate in the dental plan. The dental plan is a benefit paid for by the faculty or staff member and runs on a rolling cycle, based on date of service, instead of a calendar year.

For 2017, VUMC offers two dental plans: Cigna Dental Care (DHMO) and BlueCross BlueShield Dental (PPO). Starting Jan. 1, 2018, VUMC will offer three dental plans: Cigna Dental Care (DHMO), BlueCross BlueShield Dental (PPO), and Delta Dental (PPO).

Delta Dental (PPO)

Delta Dental is a PPO plan similar to BlueCross BlueShield DentalBlue. The Delta Dental plan offers a broader network than BCBS and Cigna. You will have access to both the Delta Dental PPO and the Delta Dental Premier networks. The Delta Dental PPO network gives you lower out-of-pocket costs, while the Delta Dental Premier network gives you access to more providers. Before electing a new dental plan, check that your dental provider(s) are in the plan’s network.

If you currently have BCBS, and your current provider participates in both BCBS and Delta Dental networks, you may want to compare premium rates between the two. Delta Dental’s overall cost to members is lower than BCBS. Both BCBS and Delta Dental are accepted at the VUMC Dental Clinic.

If you decide to enroll in the Delta Dental PPO plan for 2018 during Open Enrollment, Delta Dental will waive the one-year waiting period for orthodontia. Delta Dental will not carry over any amount spent on orthodontia with BlueCross BlueShield, which means if you have hit your lifetime maximum with BlueCross BlueShield, you may be eligible for additional orthodontia coverage.
