Know before you go: download a short-term disability checklist

Before you start your short-term disability leave, there are a few steps you’ll need to take to ensure you are financially covered during that time period and that your team is covered in your absence.

  1. Let your department manager know the date your short-term disability will begin.
  2. Consider using your flexPTO and/or grandfathered sick time to bring the 2-week gap until your short-term disability payments begin.
  3. Tell your manager and the benefits department how you will use your flexPTO and grandfathered sick.
  4. Notify Unum to file a claim.
  5. Continue paying your benefits premiums as an unpaid employee through direct billing.
  6. Let Unum and your manager know the date you plan to return to work or if you need to extend your leave.
  7. Obtain a work release from your physician before returning to work.

About short-term disability:

Short-term disability insurance provides income replacement if you are unable to work for an extended period due to an approved medical condition. Short-term disability benefits may continue for up to 24 weeks. Note: Short-term disability is not the same as FMLA, the Family and Medical Leave Act. FMLA is a federal law that provides employees the right to take a leave of absence for personal or family medical reasons and leave for military families while maintaining job protection. Employees deemed eligible for FMLA are not paid for that time off. Short-term disability insurance pays a portion of the employee’s pay while that employee is away on medical leave.  Learn more here.
