On-demand learning: skills training when you want it, where you want it

on-demand-learningLearning new skills is important for both personal and professional growth. But finding the time in our hectic schedules to learn a new skill is easier said than done. Author Malcom Gladwell famously said it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in an ultra-competitive field, but studies show that devoting as few as 15 minutes a day to a new skill can help you go from novice to proficient.

The VUMC Learning and Development team is making it a little easier for employees to find time to learn new skills. The team has launched new on-demand learning opportunities that give busy Vanderbilt University Medical Center employees access to more than 200 free, web-based, professional development courses that can be accessed when and where employees want to learn.

“Throughout our assessment of current and anticipated gaps in learning, we consistently heard from our leaders a need for short, on-demand learning opportunities that a person could access through any mobile device,” says Joey Qualls, consultant, VUMC Learning & Development.  “We found we could distribute much of this on-demand content through a flipped classroom approach, where the information is delivered to you at your convenience and pace, and we’re sure you can find value in this content no matter where you are within your career path.”

VUMC has partnered with Skillsoft, My Quick Coach and Microsoft to offer courses and video workshops from world-renowned experts. These courses are quick, easily accessible and highly beneficial, and there are courses for every level of your career. Visit the on-demand learning page and sign in to the courses with your VUnetID and password. You can access the courses on any computer or mobile device.

My Quick Coach experts offer tips, tools and advice on topics ranging from time management and team building to strategic planning and improving productivity. Each video presentation lasts less than 10 minutes — most are five minutes or less — and can be viewed on a computer or mobile device. You can also read transcripts of each video as well as the bio of the presenter.

The Skillsoft courses cover a wide range of interpersonal skills, from communication and workplace conflict to situational leadership and customer service. Most courses consist of two or more sub-courses, each taking less than 30 minutes to complete. Because these courses are on-demand, you can exit a course and return later without starting over. You can take a tour of a course or sub-course to determine your interest in that topic. Like what you see, but not ready to begin the course? Save it to a Learning Plan by clicking the Actions button beside that course. You can also check out related courses within a particular topic.
