Open Enrollment News: New dental PPO plan added for 2018

 Open Enrollment 2018 dental changes

To give you more choice in dental plans, we will offer two PPO dental options for 2018. New for 2018 is Delta Dental, a PPO plan similar to BlueCross BlueShield DentalBlue. We will still offer the BCBS DentalBlue PPO plan as well as the Cigna DHMO plan. See below for highlights:

“We always look for ways to add value to our benefits package and give employees choices that fit their lifestyle and budget. Delta Dental of TN offers competitive rates, a broader network of providers and excellent service. Coupled with existing Cigna and BlueCross BlueShield plans, the addition of Delta Dental will give employees a range of affordable options for them and their families,” said Rick Ohmer, senior director of HR Shared Services.

  • The Delta Dental plan offers a broader network than BlueCross BlueShield and Cigna. As a subscriber, you will have access to both the Delta Dental PPO and the Delta Dental Premier networks. The Delta Dental PPO network gives you lower out-of-pocket costs, while the Delta Dental Premier network gives you access to even more providers. You can search for participating providers in either network here.
  • Before electing a new dental plan, be sure to check and make sure your dental provider(s) are in the new plan’s network.
  • Delta Dental offers the largest provider network in the nation. In fact, 80 percent of the nation’s dental providers participate in the Delta Dental network. If you have BlueCross BlueShield Dental Blue, and your provider is not in network, you may want to check and see if your provider is covered in-network by Delta Dental. We found that over 90 percent of providers used by VUMC employees are in the Delta Dental Premier network versus approximately 80 percent in the BlueCross BlueShield network.
  • The VUMC Dental Group is in both the Delta Dental PPO and Premier networks.
  • If you currently have BlueCross BlueShield, and your current provider participates in both BCBS and Delta Dental networks, you may want to compare premium rates between the two. Delta Dental’s overall cost to members is lower than BlueCross BlueShield, so you will see a lower payroll deduction if you choose Delta Dental.
  • Delta Dental also ranks high in customer satisfaction. In 2016, Delta Dental of TN customer rated their overall experience at 98.9 percent.
  • If you decide to enroll in the Delta Dental PPO plan for 2018 during Open Enrollment, Delta Dental will waive the one-year waiting period for orthodontia. Delta Dental will not carry over any amount spent on orthodontia with BlueCross BlueShield, which means if you have hit your lifetime maximum with BlueCross BlueShield, you may be eligible for additional orthodontia coverage.
  • If you do not change your dental plan, you will be automatically enrolled in the dental plan you elected for 2017. If you cover your spouse or children on your dental plan, their coverage will also roll over to 2018.
  • Dental benefits elected during Open Enrollment will take effect January 1, 2018.
  • You can find more information about the BlueCross BlueShield PPO and Cigna DHMO plans on the HR website.
